Greeting from the ALSC Digital Content Task Force!

We are excited to be part of the ALSC blog on the last Sunday of each month.   We will provide information on favorite book apps, children’s digital programs, links to digital blogs, questions and answers on digital issues, and other digital resources.

Meet us!  The ALSC Digital Content Task Force virtual committee members are Paige Bentley-Flannery (chair), Rachel J Wood and Allison Santos.  The task force was formed to support Junko Yokota, ALSC representative of the ALA Working Group on Libraries and Digital Content.

At this time, our focus is:

  • To support the digital needs of children’s librarians.
  • To give insight into the future of apps and eBooks in libraries.
  • To provide information on digital children’s book content.

As a virtual committee communicating through emails, skype and phone, it is always a wonderful treat when we actually meet in person.  We had an opportunity for this to happen at ALA 2012 in Anaheim.  We discussed current children’s digital content in and out of libraries.   We also discussed fun and creative ways to introduce and use children’s digital content. We shared our favorite book apps like Animalia by Graeme Base.

We are excited about the digital world!  We are learning about digital content providers, eReaders and how children and families can best utilize this technology, eBooks and the publishing world, book apps and what’s available, and children’s digital programs!  For example:  What about a Fancy Nancy Book Party that includes Fancy Nancy book apps? You could have a crazy dinosaur dress up beach scene in the background of your library room like this.

We are also creating a library survey on the digital content for children’s librarians and we need your help.  Below are four of the questions from the survey out next month.

Digital Content Survey Questions:

  • What kind of questions do you have from patrons at your library about eBooks?
  • Does your library have digital programs? Children’s?
  • Does your library provide circulating eReaders/tablets?
  • What support do you need from ALSC to help with the digital shift at your library?

We would love to hear from you.   Please email us at digitalcontenttaskforce@gmail.com

Also, please join our ALSC Digital Content Task force group on ALA Connect.  Share ideas!  Add to discussions!

We look forward to hearing from you,

Paige
