ALA Midwinter 2012

A Midwinter state of mind

We had a grundle of snow here last Saturday night — fortunately it’s already gone — but it put me in a Midwinter state of mind. Are you attending ALA Midwinter Conference? Dallas will be the place to be January 20-24 as thousands of ALA members gather to conduct our association’s business.

A major highlight for ALSC is the Youth Media Awards (@alayma on Twitter), at which we announce winners for the Newbery, Caldecott, Carnegie, Arbuthnot Lecture, Sibert, Geisel, Batchelder, Odyssey (with YALSA), Belpré (with REFORMA). You can attend in person and enjoy the energy and excitement in the room. Or you can watch the live webcast on your computer. Either way, you’ll be among the first to know which books and media are our committees’ choices for the best of the best. As the announcer for ALSC, I’m excited to get to share the much anticipated news, and hoping that my language skills are functioning at that hour! If you’re there, join us Monday, January 23 at 7:45 am CT for the awards. The webcast will also begin at 7:45.

We’ll be able to dish about all the winners at our joint youth division reception on Monday night in Dallas. The reception, co-sponsored by ALSC, AASL and YALSA, will begin at 6 pm CT.  This is always a great time to relax, hear stories and share opinions about the awards,  and have some good conversation with friends from ALSC and our sister divisions.

Use the Twitter hashtag #alamw12 to keep up on the latest about Midwinter Conference. Our great office staff will also be sending our updates in the next few months so that you have all the details to join ALSC for ALSC 101, board meetings, the joint reception, and other activities. Hope to see you there!
