Respecting the Thank You Notes

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

…A class comes for a library tour, you do your usual thing, and then a couple days later a manila envelope shows up on your desk with 22 hand made thank you cards from a bunch of creative second graders. Or maybe it’s one giant poster-size piece which each of the kids signed. Sometimes they each say what they liked best about their visit (“the books!” “the puppets!” “the dead bugs in the light fixtures!”)…

Waiting for Christmas touches on the excitement and impatience felt by children celebrating Christmas.  Christmas just [...]

Behind the ALSC Scenes–Part 1

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I can remember the excitement in her voice as she came over the hill, “Grandfather! Grandfather!” Nestled in a small cabin in the Swiss Alps, with porridge on the stove and a goat at the door, Heidi was coming home—the same way I felt every time my mom opened that book.
It was the sound [...]

Holiday Traditions

Monday, December 17th, 2007

‘Tis the season! Trees are trimmed, candles are lit, gifts are wrapped, cookies are baked, families make plans to gather, turkeys go on sale, music fills the air….
This is the time of year that children’s librarians debate whether or not to have Santa Storytimes, and wish they could find a really good book that is [...]
