One of the best ways to serve tweens is to build personal relationships with them.
By doing this, you can develop a better understanding of this unique group, which will in turn help you to deliver better programming and services for tweens. With summer quickly approaching, we are sure to see more tweens in our libraries.
This summer, when you see a tween, try to strike up a conversation with them. Ask them about what books they are reading, what movies they enjoy, or maybe even invite them to one of your library programs. Another way to make connections, is to have a conversation with tweens about things that they are passionate about or to deliver programming on that subject.
To prepare for summer programming and to get you started, I have compiled a list of the top ten things that are popular with tweens right now:
- Fidget spinners
- Watching Youtube
- Wonder by R.J. Palacio
- Loom Braclets
- The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan
- Descendants 2 (A Disney Channel original movie)
- Emoji expressions
As you can see from this list, the interests of tweens are vast and ever changing, but as librarians, it is our job to actively seek connections to better understand our tween patrons. Make that connection, and create a lasting impact on the tweens at your library today.
