ALSC Blog – 2013 in Review

The mission of the ALSC Blog is to provide a venue for coverage of time sensitive news in children’s librarianship, current issues in the field, and programs, conferences, initiatives, resources, and activities of interest to ALSC members and those interested in children’s librarianship. It’s time to take a look back over the past year to see if we are fulfilling our mission.

The statistical numbers for the year demonstrate the Blog’s continued growth:

Visits
38.4 % increase over 2012
211,014 vs 152,428

Unique Visitors
33.45% increase over 2012
144,982 vs 108,641

Pageviews
37.93% increase over 2012
323,238 vs 234,344

I cannot offer enough thanks to our team of regular ALSC Bloggers, as well as to the many guest bloggers and live bloggers, who have been VERY busy this year:

Earlier this year, I offered a Mid-year ALSC Blog Report, which told of the most visited posts in the first part of the year. Here are the ten most visited posts published since July:

  1. Librarian Laughs by Lisa Taylor
  2. Top Titles for Tweens – 2013 by School Age Programs and Services Committee
  3. Eggs Away! Egg Drop Science for School-Age Children by Amy Koester
  4. Gravity Science: A STEM Program for Preschoolers by Amy Koester
  5. Give Thanks for Storytime by Abby Johnson
  6. Chemistry Science for Preschoolers by Amy Koester
  7. It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane… It’s a Superhero Training Academy by School Age Programs and Services Committee
  8. The Snow Queen, Frozen, and Feminist Critique by Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla
  9. Making the Leap from Library to Non-Library Positions by Kiera Parrott
  10. Do-It-Yourself Spa Day for Tweens by Sarah Bean Thompson

With the help and support of ALSC Staff including Laura Schulte-Cooper (Program Officer, Communications), Dan Bostrom (Marketing Specialist, Membership), and Aimee Strittmatter (Executive Director), as well as ALSC President, Starr LaTronica, the ALSC Blog completed several important projects since July:

    • Developed photo guidelines for the ALSC Blog
    • With a particular emphasis on submissions from children’s librarians and school librarians, the ALSC Blog continued to encourage guest bloggers to submit ideas for the blog
    • Continued monthly committee posts from a variety of ALSC Committees and linked these posts to each of the committees’ roster pages and to the ALSC Professional Tools page
    • Developed a Guest Post Proposal Form for requests from “non-librarian” guest bloggers

2013 was great!  I can’t wait to see what 2014 has in store!
