This evening I was lucky enough to attend the Random House and Books on Tape cocktail reception for author Carl Hiaasen, in celebration of his forthcoming middle-grade novel. I read and thouroughly enjoyed “Chomp” and all his previous children’s books and had been looking forward to this reception since receiving an invitation. I was not disappointed, as the event more than lived up to my expectations – it exceeded them!
Mr. Hiaasen was an incredibly gracious guest of honor. He made sure to talk to as many people as possible during the reception part of the evening, reminding everyone to take a special “Chomp” cookie before they left. In his speech, he talked about his love of nature and the outdoors, and said he hoped his books inspired other children to go outside and explore the world around them.
He also taught this “Man vs. Nature” fan a truth or two about the adventure and wildlife TV industry. For example, did your know that when you see any animal up close in a nature documentary, it is probably a tame creature that’s being paid for its time?! I certainly did not.
The reception was a wonderful way to conclude my first day of PLA 2012. I’ll be on line bright and early at the Random House booth tomorrow morning to get my free signed copy! He’ll be there signing at 10 a.m.
