3 Bags Full: Literacy and learning with a local-global impact

Where Fair Trade Meets Early Literacy Literacy goes hand in hand with learning about the world; literacy combined with fair trade can change it for the better. My journey to understand the connection between fair trade and literacy began in 2004, after a trip to Bolivia where I connected with two artisan groups and began importing their crafts. A group called Ayni Bolivia began to design puppet carrying bags with painted scenes on the front so that children could carry their finger puppets and use the scenes to tell stories. One of these knit bags filled with puppets arrived by surprise in one of my shipments. I put them on the display table with the other Bolivian handicrafts and was delighted by the warm reception they received. It was one thing to recognize the potential of this fair trade product; it was another to find the people who need it….
