I love it when I find something that is good for me AND my customers. I recently discovered the Khan Academy. Khan Academy is free, fun, educational and totally awesomely wonderful. The site contains over 2,600 videos on math, physics, biology, chemistry, finance & art. Kids (and you!) can start by watching videos on the basics of a topic and then work through practice exercises.
There is even a cool scratch pad that you can use as you work out the equations, the system will tell you when you are proficient and ready to move on to the next challenge.
The knowledge map helps you determine the topic that you need to focus on next and is a great visual showing how each piece of knowledge is an important building block.
And if all of that is not enough to convince you that this is a totally cool educational program, it is also a game. Users earn “energy points”, “badges” and SERIOUS bragging rights.
Khan Academy an unbelievable organization with a mission to give the world a high-quality education – for free. Teachers & homeschool parents can use this resource to coordinate classwork and monitor student work. Kids looking for homework help can find explanations here. Adults after continuing education opportunities can use this as well. I know that I didn’t get all that I wanted to out of my Art History classes in college (it was really hard to stay awake), so I LOVE the art history videos (organized by time period, style, artist or theme).
Note: you don’t need to log in to view the videos (YouTube hosted), but to take advantage of the rest of the site features you need to create an account. Kids under 13 will need a parent to help.
Take a minute to check out Khan Academy and be sure to let customers know about this fabulous (and FREE) resource.

Khan Academy is also available as an iPhone app. See

Great resource!
I have worked on this before and I agree with all you said. We are currently looking for ways to introduce it to our children and teens through some type of fun programming.
