Revise, rework: Review!

I’ve been reviewing books & media for library journals since 1996. Occasionally, I’ve taken breaks from this duty, but pretty much have been at it for 15 years. By now, you’d think I have it down to an art, but each time I get an assignment, I have a tiny moment of panic — I have to do the book justice, what if I hate it? What if it is an awesome book and my review doesn’t relay that? I have had both happen; luckily editors are gracious and smart, asking pointed questions to get at the meat of what the writer is trying to say, so the reviews generally end up sounding pretty good. (Blog posts do not have the added touch of an outside editor, so you get only self-edits here!) But why review? I have to admit, I started doing it to build my resume. But now?…
