Preparing for Library Camp

On Tuesday, September 16, I will attend Library Camp. It’s an unconference where we will focus on library technology, innovation and problem-solving. David Lee King will be the guest speaker. Part of the camp time will be mini-presentations using the Pecha Kucha format. A six-minute presentation followed by a 1 minute question/answer period seems doable. My plan is to present my experience with putting together podcasts for the ALSC Blog and to encourage podcasting with and for kids.

I’m gathering my thoughts as I narrow down what to say/show in six minutes. Six minutes?!

Tony Vincent’s Learning in Hand website has a page about creating podcasts based on his experience putting together Radio WillowWeb.

On the ALSC ChildTech Wiki (a section of the ALSC Wiki), Bradley Debrick writes about the Johnson County (KS) Library’s online storytime, including a link to their page with 17 stories available as MP3 files.

Denver Public Library offers Stories For Kids! podcasts.

Orange County (FL) Library System offers Children’s Podstory.

The Inkless Tales Podcast is part of Inkless Tales (www.inklesstales.com) which is listed under “Favorite Children’s Stories” of the ALSC Great Web Sites for Kids.

Menasha (WI) Public Library hosted a podcasting camp this summer and now has several podcasts on their web site, including FaveRaves. A Kids News Podcasting Club is just beginning this fall.

Kids Corner from WXPN (public radio from the University of Pennsylvania) is a live, interactive radio show for children ages 5-13 and also offers weekly podcasts.

At least I still have several days left to prepare for six minutes.

One Response to Preparing for Library Camp

  1. Teresa Walls says:

The unconference is an interesting format, and I’m happy to have participated.

After my six-minutes about podcasting, another unconference-attendee told me about a free service called Gcast (http://www.gcast.com/). The site, as stated on the Gcast site, “is run by the same people that run GarageBand.com. Our goal with GarageBand is to redefine how music is discovered and promoted. Our goal with Gcast is to make personal broadcasting simple. In pursuing these goals we hope to democratize both music and media.” You can even record your podcast by talking on your phone.

Another conference goer said that the youth librarian in her system had used Gcast. As they experienced podcasting, they decided to go even further with it and have purchased software to further enhance their podcasts. But, she said, Gcast was a great way to get started and explore how it would work before making any purchase requests.
