State Association/ALA Joint Memberships

One of my students at Texas Woman’s University recently asked me about joint (and reduced) membership for students in the Texas Library Association and the American Library Association. I must admit I had no idea what she was talking about. But she is right! Sixteen state associations have a joint membership opportunity, which includes divisions and round tables, to encourage students to become involved. Go to for information and encourage library school students with whom you work to join. ALSC membership for a student is $18 when they also join TLA and ALA at reduced rates (the combined basic rate for TLA and ALA is $32). Prices appear to be the same for other participating states. -Jeanette Larson

Newsweek and Children’s Books

Check out the July 28, 2008 issue of Newsweek for an article on the 100th anniversary of Anne of Green Gables. The article, available online at,  discusses the continued, and often surprising, popularity of this classic. Immediately following in the paper edition is an article on the new film, Man on Wire, a documentary to be released August 1 about Philippe Petit, the inspiration for  Mordicai Gerstein’s Caldecott Award-winning book, Man Who Walked Between the Towers. The film is for adults and covers more than the walk between the towers but be sure to display the book for parents to share with the kids and to show that children’s books covered this topic first! -Jeanette Larson
